Photo Blog

posted by May

I recently moved to California and suddenly life's been in full gear. No more sound of waves, I don't hear the brawling feral chickens and no more feel of sand on my feet. And when something as beautiful as Hawaii was taken away from you, you evolve and learn to compensate for the loss. I did this with a new fullscale hobby - digital photography. Writing took a backseat, shoe designing sitting next to it.

Fullscale photography to me doesnt mean you have to be walking around with your camera hanging around your neck all the time. No. You get a pretty shopper tote for that heavy camera (hee). But I mean joining photography clubs, buying books and paying more attention to what you shoot and how you stand when you shoot. You're not just taking photos, you're taking beautiful photos.

Recently while gardening (I call this my mind breather), I took a shot of an orange lily. As a girl and through my eyes, I admired the whole plant with its pot and shot it. It came out nothing out of the ordinary. Another shot, I encased it in a black garbage bag, positioned it with minimum lighting (sun) and shot it real tight. The result is this:

Orange Lily  photo by May Rogers

I was satisfied with my shot and thought it'll look best as my desktop wall. And it did. My mom-in-law thought so too. Then there's this editor Travis North from Shutter Photo Magazine who thought my photo os good enough to publish in their magazine. He made my simple effort into a learning point for the photographer followers of the magazine. I was thankful that while some consider me as a serious hobbyist, others could take me as an admirable photographer as well. Read the article Orange Lily from Shutter Photo Magazine.

Travelogue: March in Manila

Posted by May

Politics Talk
My very recent trip to Manila took me to places I have never set foot in nor appreciated much before when I was still living there. My head was deadset on the negatives. Raised in a busy and overly-crowded city, I became unaware of the tiny things which make up a big and progressive nation.

Me and President Noynoy
One thing I didnt fail to miss and applaud was the new Philippine president's goal to move ahead with the times and not forgetting to take the people with him. As a bachelor, President Noynoy Aquino's fight with corruption glued me to the tube most of the days watching senate hearings and the entertaining corrupt military officials who tend to forget how much government millions they have stowed away in foreign banks. I especially found enormous respect for Senator Jinggoy Estrada for being relentless.

One day as I was watching the news, I heard that President Noynoy bought a brand new bulletproof car that he himself drove. It caused numerous mouths to speak and critics to criticize seeking answers if the president spent the people's money for that pricey car. And of course he replied (not in exact words), "I'm rich and my family is rich, I'm single and I love cars. I will spend my money on buying cars if I want to without touching a single cent of government's money" - something close to that nutshell.

What do I love about that? Since the president was driving the car himself as opposed to presidential chauffeur and security, he gets the chance to see street poverty first hand. Due to this, he gave attention to street kids being out in streets a lot instead of spending time in public schools. He also focused his immediate attention to buses emitting black smoke causing sickening air pollution.

Transportation Talk

MRT
I rode a lot of Metropolitan train. It came to the point that I became too impatient for jam-packed roads and speedy cars. Metropolitan Railway Transit became very indispensible to many young professionals. MRT fare is cheap not to mention fast. The other railway system was LRT which I hated most of all back then. But now the cars are new and spacious, I dont mind riding them at all. I think it's safe just grab your purse real close to your heart and eyes.

Tricycles are not cheap but this small vehicle can get you to places jeepneys and buses cant. For Php20, you can experience this loud, roaring thrill if you are not very picky. Tricycles can be found almost everywhere in the city and provinces.

Food Talk
My long list of food I brought with me. I made sure that I'd only eat those that I wont find anywhere else in US. It was a goal and one way to achieve it was to eat and meet friends. Here's some:

Karyoka

Taho

Halo-halo

Green mango with bagoong

Mango bravo

Binatog

peach mango pies (Jollibee)

Travel Talk
I visited places with friends and though most of them are malls and spas (gotta go to spa!), I got to collect photos especially for SOTC blog purposes of places that are new to me. This way readers will be encouraged to visit places and form their opinion on what's good and what's not. The idea is to share. So I share! :)

The Fort, Global City (Taguig).
View website here.
A highly urbanized district in Taguig. Nothing different from Ortigas or Libis but the high rise condos there are selling like pancakes. The young entreps and the expats are the target buyers as well as foreigners who are opting to settle in Manila.

The UP-Ayala Hub
Lets get techie, shall we? The hub is the latest hangout in Quezon City for families and young career people. Also built by Ayala Land, a visitor can immediately recognize the similarity of the two hotspots (Hub and the Fort).

At the Hub, QC

SM Malls
SM Malls are huge and numerous. They're literally everywhere. SM Malls symbolize Filipinos' love for shopping and everytime, a mall pops up and it gets bigger and bigger! I have been to most SM malls and in any given time, I never get to roam one mall in a day (except SM Fairview). SM MOA is currently the biggest with hundreds stores inside, people actually hire a golf cart or a tram to get around!

SM North Edsa

My Favorite Scenes
Amidst the daily hustle and bustle in the city, I get my high whenever it's time to come back to my place in Greenview. I love the busy area leading to the subdivision entrance then everything becomes totally distant and peaceful. I call it "city away from the city".

Finally, while I was there...
...I got to see precious friends: attended Elizabeth's bridal shower and celebrate my 10th year friendship with my Korean buddies.

...I got to see Supermoon. That phenomena in which the moon appears to be closer to earth than ever before. I sat outside my door and took a shot of it, it does appear closer!

supermoon 2011
...I got to be a part of a fashion bazaar. Me and Trendygirls team got invited to showcase shoe fashion for the Summer Fashion 2011. It was hard work to be there but it was totally worth it. I got to meet people, they got to know more about Trendygirls and that was the goal.

Sundance bazaar
...I got to be published on one of iphone's city tour guide via itunes. My editor at My GPS City emailed me and told me my article's up! See link here and download it from itunes for $2.99, you can get 10 places guide with audio guide on your iphone.

New Year. New Home.by Jackie

I was sitting on a bench in a hospital waiting for my daughter's name to be called for her follow up check up after having her hand surgery. It was also the time that the doctor would remove the cast on on my daughter's hand which she wore for about a month. As a mother I was so anxious what would the doctor would tell me and my husband about the result and progress of the surgery. However, I had never seen my husband more worried than I am only except when there is something "big" that he want to tell me.

I did not mind much about it at first for I did not want to talk nor think about anything else rather than the doctor's opinion and conclusion about my daughter condition. But he seemed to be a kid who has been looking for a candy or of some sort. He kept on walking around, going in and out of the hospital. His moves made me more worried of something that could be related to my daughter's surgery. So I did ask him what had been bothering him and he could tell it to me right there and then.

He sat down beside me looking down on the floor and asked me, "Could you live here?" I was stunned could not think of anything to say though there were so much thoughts in mind. Questions like, "Why are you asking me that kind of question NOW?", "What do you mean by here?" , "What is wrong?", "Why do we have to move?", "What made you come up with that idea?"  BUT none of those thoughts were uttered.

He held my hand and touched my face and moved it towards his face then he told me, "It is fine if you can not. It is just my thought."

I did hold back his hand and told him, "Wherever you go, I will go. Just please do not ask me anything like this again in a situation where you know that I can be caught in between."

To confirm, he asked me once more, "So, can you live here?" I replied with a question to verify if he was serious about it. His answers were very consistent to what I was expecting for his idea is not only an idea, but it was already a PLAN.

That happened about 10 months ago. It took us 7 months to prepare for the BIG MOVE of our lives, that is to restart our lives in a city afar from all our families and friends but certainly not away.

I do not only love my husband but I do trust his wisdom as well. Above all, I do trust God that every thing is just going to be fine wherever my husband and I will be. The important part of it is that, to me, we are together and we will always be, till death do us part.
A start for new friendships, new challenges, and new adventures for me, my hubby and my daughter.

Flying to our NEW HOME

Thick clouds covering the whole island where I could only see is the peak of Halla Mountain.

The excited family to their NEW HOME.

Happy Hearts Day!

Posted by May
It's Valentine's Day weekend. Since Feb 14th falls on a Monday, it is another busy day for my "date" so I prepared a romantic weekend for the love of my life.

Saturday (Feb 12):

food: I prepared a hearty lunch for my hubby who loves fish. In all honesty, I think I have exhausted all means of cooking fish. So I tried a simple one called "Grilled sesame-seed-coated tuna". Tip: cook in less than 3 mins.

movie date: Now this is a big mistake - Watching a movie that is less than romantic on a V Day! We watched SANCTUM which took the breath out of us (literally)! A must-see movie but see it on other days. If you must stay home, I recommend "Dear John" (chic flick) on netflix. It's so...hm. Made me cry.

gift: I prepared my not-so-costly present for him a week ago. Then I wrapped it in my own special wrapping. I printed his fave photo of me in black and white (I think it's creative and saves me a dollar). Then I looked for the most perfect card that "says it all".

Check out this cute little card. I took time to photograph it coz it is rare that I find such a card that describes me as a wife that could make me say "I think I wrote that!".

The Card:

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYBODY!!

Building a Relationship (A Wife's Journal)

Posted by TM
When I started going out with men in my 20s, I remember my sister always advising me to grab every opportunity to hang out in mother’s kitchen so I could master the art of cooking. She explained that it was imperative because, as popular adage goes, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”  Stubborn as I have always been, instead of studying recipes, I spent more time praying to God to find me a wonderful man whose taste for a woman had nothing to do with his palate. I bet it was a hard request because it took God two long decades to answer my prayer.
Although I do not disagree with the said popular axiom, I cannot  say that it is true for everyone. After all, there’s an exception to every rule. After being married to what I call my GG, short for God’s Gift, what I found true (at least for me) is that the way to a man’s heart is through his source/s of joy and inspiration.  But do not get me wrong. Like many men, my husband also loves eating - American foods, to be specific. Among his favorites are his personal homemade hamburgers, steak with French Fries on the side, chicken wings dipped in his favorite barbeque sauce, Frog Pond’s hangover omelets, and Hurricane’s grouper fish sandwich. However, I noticed that although it is important for him that I pay attention to his gustatory satisfaction, it matters more that I find time sharing with him his passions that speaks to his pleasures, such as: biking, watching science fiction and comedy movies, cheering for his favorite baseball team, listening to political debates and engaging in some intellectual discussion (he is a hard core news junkie!), and last but not the least, viewing police and detective shows.
Since I do not share all these interests that make his heart race and content, I must admit that sometimes it is difficult for me to sit still without getting fidgety, but still - I join in and share with him his delights and or even disappointments; like how he patiently listens to me when I talk to him about my interest in fashion, home décor, and romantic films, even if they do not really make sense to him. Perhaps this is the reason why they say successful relationships are hard work. Although of course, it can also be a bed of roses. But again, like any garden, it does not happen without many days of cultivating, tending, watering, and tilling. SHARING is what pegs out our happy meter needle. When I give to my husband and he to me, we send a message to ourselves that our presence to each other makes all the difference - and that what makes us feel great about being husband and wife, and our wonderful marriage a joyful ride.

'The love in your heart wasn't put there to stay; love isn't love until you give it away." (borrowed quotation)

KEEPING TRADITION
Posted by TM
To keep the flame in marriage always blazing, some married friends asserted that keeping tradition at home further binds the relationship between husband and wife.  Thus, soon enough we decided to let its magic works on ours as well.
Our celebrations usually are not extravagant or grand. On the contrary they are otherwise.  What matter to us is that we keep our tradition consistent with a lot of creativity ingredients to make it fun, exciting, and memorable – something we can look back and laugh when our hair starts turning to silver and our eyes casting towards the “departure” board.

Make Believe
Our Thanksgiving Day celebration will never be the same without our chef's dress up gimmick. The pretense gives an added thrill not only to our food preparation but also to the ultimate joy of sharing our festive meal

Out of the Box
Our exchange gift on special ocassions is always a guess what game. I thought my husband's H1NI/Flu shot gift (OUCH!) on my recent birthday was something unbeatable in terms of being prolific. He called it tough love; I said, it's two birds in one shot! But in fairness he always gives me other nice gifts too.

Post-Its

On our first Wedding Anniversary, out of desperation on what gift to give my husband, I wrote sweet messages for him. I woke up and crawled quietly out of bed at 12 midnight and started posting them in places he would go first thing in the morning. He was really surprised and was touched by the idea.

Love Touch
On Valentine's Day I made flowers out of foam paper and pipecleaner for him. They  gave a personal touch on my not so expensive chocolates and card.

"Let your light shines upon every one, so that others can see your kindness."

The Challenge:
SHINE! Don't be afraid to protect the unborn children, safeguard the sacredness of marriage, feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and be a salt to the world.

"Be perfect just like your Father in heaven."

The Challenges:
1. LOVE - Though shall NOT bear hatred in your heart. Love everyone including your enemies.

Today's Homily: Taken from St. Matthew 6: 24-34
"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness will be unto you."

The Challenge:
Life is more than the food; body is more than the clothing, so don't worry for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. The virtue of hope is knowing that God will give us everything we need for our salvation.

Reasons for our Hope:
1. God loves us! He is not distracted by our destruction.
2. All sins are forgivable.
3. God desires our salvation.

Our Prayer:
Lord, help me to seek what really matter.

YUMMY RECIPES

Posted by May
Just what all married women need - a blog with food recipes! I'm no chef but as a wife of the modern times, cooking was never been in my to-do list. I barely stayed in our kitchen prior my marriage! But this is what I found out, if you put your heart into it, cooking is quite fun especially if your husband is there excitedly waiting for every meal with a big smile on his face. These recipes are tried, tested and easy to prepare. Some I created on my own, some I researched first then tried them in my kitchen. They are not necessarily expensive, just easy, hearty, tasty and healthy.

GOLDEN SALMON with BASIL

Salmon steak
dried basil
dried oregano
olive oil
corn pepper / salt
veggies such as broccoli, string beans, mushrooms

How to:
Wash the salmon steak and pat it dry. Brush olive oil on to it then sprinkle dried oregano and basil, salt and black cracked corn pepper. Pre heat oven to 425 degrees. Put it in the oven for good 20 minutes or until brown.

Veggies: Boil them all together. It is also good to steam them but this process leaves some of the veggies dry.

SHRIMP SALAD

What you need:
Fresh vegggies of your choice for salad
boiled egg
fresh shrimps
mushrooms
sesame seeds
dried oregano
vinegar and sugar
onion

How:
In a pan, saute shrimp, mushrooms, sesame seeds, onions and sprinkle dried oregano (half tsp). Use olive oil to saute them. When the shrimp turns orange, set aside and let it cool. In a bowl, mix vinegar with sugar (amount of sugar depends on your taste). Pour the mixture to salad veggies. Then mix in the shrimp and mushrooms. Deshell boiled egg, cut in half and put them on the salad as topping.
